Why Family Mini Sessions Might Be Exactly What You Need This Year

Updated: Apr 24

If you're a busy parent (or just someone who never gets around to printing photos), family mini sessions might be your new best friend. As a Vermont-based branding and portrait photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how impactful these short and sweet sessions can be—not just for getting beautiful images, but for creating a relaxed, low-pressure way to capture what matters most.

Whether it’s your first time working with a professional photographer or you’ve done full-length sessions in the past, family mini sessions offer a fresh, fun alternative that’s perfect for this season of life.

What Is a Family Mini Session?

A family mini session is a shorter, more streamlined version of a full family photoshoot. These sessions are typically 15–20 minutes long, held at a beautiful pre-selected location, and offer a handful of final edited images. They’re perfect for families who want updated portraits without the time commitment of a full session.

At Owl’s Iris Photography, mini sessions are thoughtfully designed to feel easy, natural, and fun. I’ll guide you through simple posing (nothing stiff or awkward!) while letting your family’s unique energy shine through.

A few key things to know about my Vermont mini sessions:

  • Short & sweet: 20 minutes of guided photography

  • Beautiful Vermont locations: Think apple orchards, mountain overlooks, and golden meadows

  • 10 final edited images delivered via digital gallery

  • Accessible investment: Typically $425

  • Perfect for families, couples, dog moms, or just you and your people

Why Families Love Mini Sessions

Let’s be honest—scheduling time for family photos isn’t always easy. Between school, work, naps, and sports, a full afternoon might feel out of reach (and not super fun with really little littles...) . That’s why mini sessions are so that perfectly perfect sweet spot: they give you everything you need in a bite-sized package.

Some of the biggest reasons clients return year after year for mini sessions:

  • They’re quick. Perfect for little kids with short attention spans (or grown-ups who’d rather be doing something else).

  • They’re low pressure. You don’t have to “perform.” Just show up and let me take care of the rest.

  • They’re beautiful. Even in a short amount of time, we can capture joy, connection, and real personality.

  • They make great gifts. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, holiday cards—you name it.

When Are Family Mini Sessions Offered?

I offer mini sessions a few times a year, typically:

  • Spring (April–May): Apple blossoms, luscious greens, and warmer light and amazing temps

  • Fall (September–October): Hello peak foliage and cozy vibes!

  • Occasionally in Winter or Summer for special projects or pop-ups

To be the first to hear about upcoming Vermont mini session dates, updates, and tips and tricks, make sure you’re on my email newsletter list—spots often book up before they’re ever announced publicly.

How to Make the Most of Your Mini Session

Want a few tips for getting the most out of your short session? Here’s what I always recommend:

  • Arrive a few minutes early. That way you can settle in without rushing, and you'll ensure you're ready to go for your shoot (minis start ON THE DOT as they are scheduled back to back)

  • Dress comfortably but intentionally. Neutrals or complementary tones work well for natural backdrops. Think complimenting each other, not matching. Thinking in layered outfits can be good as the Vermont spring weather can tick tock back and forth (even with the shifting of the clouds over the sun!)

  • Bring something sentimental. A favorite toy, a blanket, a flower picked on the way—it adds meaning and sometimes calms nerves.

  • Let go of perfection. The best moments often come from the in-between giggles and unplanned silliness.

Is a Mini Session Right for You?

Mini sessions are a great fit if:

  • You’re looking to update your family photos this year and LOVE the idea of being photographed in the apple blossoms

  • You want a taste of working with a professional photographer before committing to a full session (I totally get this)

  • You need images for holiday cards, announcements, or gifts (or your walls?! I offer custom print packages- just ask!)

  • You’re craving some time outdoors, laughing with your loved ones and capturing it in all photos

Meet Your Photographer

Hi, I’m Barbee—the heart and lens behind Owl’s Iris Photography. I’m a branding and portrait photographer based in Richmond, Vermont, and I believe photography should feel natural, like a collaboration between friends.

What I love most is seeing people for who they are and reflecting that back through images that feel true, joyful, and grounded. My clients often say, “You just get me,”—and that’s the biggest compliment I could ask for. Whether we’re meeting for the first time or seeing each other again for your annual mini session, I want you to feel comfortable, confident, and maybe even a little celebrated.

When I’m not photographing people, you’ll probably find me hiking or backpacking with my family, learning to ski, chasing light across Vermont backroads, tending to my garden, or dreaming up new ways to support other women-owned businesses through storytelling and imagery.
